RENAULT FORMULA ONE TEAM AND RACEMET RADAR SYSTEMS
I have been working with David Morton since 1996 when the idea of using weather radar and precise weather reporting systems as a tactical tool in motor racing was first conceived.
Even in those early days, the precision of forecasting was very impressive and the service has continued to develop to a state where we consider it as a front line tool in all our strategic decisions leading up to a race event.
Weather forecasting in the context of motor sport is very different to weather forecasting to the general public. We don't just need to know whether or not it will rain, we need to know (within a time frame of a few minutes) exactly when it will rain and which corners on a circuit will be affected first. We need exacting precision in both time and location. Racemet is able to give us that precision and by means of reliable communication systems is able to relay that information to the pit wall in real time.
In addition to real time forecasting, Racemet provide us with advanced forecasts ahead of the race weekend to allow us to plan our strategy for the practice periods.
Perhaps the real testament of our belief in the value of Racemet to our team is our continuing involvement with them. It is now 10 years since those early experiments and we continue to enjoy ever increasing accuracy and functionality.
